Wall Types and Fixings

The wall decides the fixing, and the fixing decides whether the installation is safe.

This is the part of the job where a wrong choice is not merely untidy. A television that comes off a wall does real damage. Identify the wall first, then choose fixings for it.

Timber stud drywall — the common case

Standard US framing: vertical timber studs, typically 16 inches on centre, with drywall over. Fix into the studs with lag bolts. Locate them with a stud finder, then confirm with a small pilot hole — stud finders misread on double studs, pipes and metal.

Drywall anchors are not adequate for a television. Toggle and butterfly anchors are rated for static loads such as pictures and shelving, not for a heavy object on a lever arm that gets pulled and swivelled. This is the most common cause of a mount failing.

If the studs do not fall where the mount needs them, fix a plywood backer board across two or more studs, then mount to that.

Brick and blockwork

Fix into the brick or block itself, never the mortar joints — mortar is far weaker and crumbles under load. Use sleeve anchors or wedge anchors of an appropriate diameter and embedment depth, drilled with a masonry bit on hammer setting.

Watch for hollow or perforated brick, which needs a different anchor type. If the drill suddenly runs free part way in, you have found a void — stop and reassess.

Poured concrete

The strongest substrate available, and the easiest to fix into properly. Wedge or sleeve anchors sized to the load. Use a hammer drill; a standard drill will not make progress. Clear dust from the hole before setting the anchor, since dust dramatically reduces holding power.

Metal stud

Common in commercial buildings and newer apartments. Metal studs are thin and will not hold a lag bolt. Options, best first:

  1. Plywood backer board spanning several studs, fixed with appropriate metal-stud toggles, mount attached to the plywood.
  2. Heavy-duty toggle fixings rated for the load, into the stud flange.
  3. Floor-to-ceiling mounting pole, avoiding the wall entirely.

Lath and plaster

Older construction: thin timber laths with plaster keyed through them. The plaster carries nothing. Locate the structural studs behind the lath and fix into those, with longer bolts to account for the extra depth. Drill slowly — plaster cracks and blows out easily, and repairs are conspicuous.

If you cannot identify the wall with confidence, stop. An installer identifies it in a minute and carries the right fixings. That is a considerably cheaper outcome than a failed mount.
