Network Cabling and Wi-Fi Installation

Wired backbone, well-placed access points — the two things that fix nearly every home network complaint.

Almost every "the Wi-Fi is terrible" problem is one of two things: a single router trying to cover more area than physics allows, or access points connected to each other wirelessly rather than by cable.

The cable is the cheap part of any run; the labour of pulling it is the expensive part. Install better cable than you currently need, and pull a spare while the wall is open.

Access point placement

A sensible home layout

  1. Modem and router in a central utility position, not wherever the incoming line happens to land.
  2. A small switch and patch panel alongside — even a six-port panel transforms tidiness.
  3. Cable runs to each ceiling access point location.
  4. Cable runs to fixed high-demand devices — TVs, consoles, desktops, NVR.
  5. Everything else on Wi-Fi.

Rack and cabinet

Even a small wall-mounted cabinet is worth it. Keep power and data separated where they run parallel, leave slack in a service loop at both ends, and label both ends of every cable at the time you pull it. Nobody has ever regretted labelling.
