TV Wall Mounting | Practical Installation Guide

A television on a wall is a static load hanging off a small number of fixings, with a lever arm if the mount articulates. It is straightforward work with the right fixings and genuinely dangerous with the wrong ones.

What a competent installation includes

Stud or solid-material location verified, not assumed
Fixings appropriate to the wall construction and rated above the actual load
Bracket level in both axes, checked after the TV is hung rather than before
Cables routed and secured so nothing hangs loose behind the screen
The mount's full range of motion tested with the TV in place

Common failure modes

Drywall anchors instead of studs. The single most common serious error. They pull out.
Fixings into mortar joints on brick. Mortar is much weaker than the brick itself.
Undersized mount chosen on screen size alone, ignoring weight.
Mounted too high, which is a comfort failure rather than a safety one but far more often regretted.
Power cord run inside the wall without an in-wall rated kit — a code violation and an insurance problem.
