Protocols, hubs and lighting — what actually matters when specifying a system that still works in five years.
Smart home equipment is easy to buy and easy to buy badly. The single most consequential decision is not which brand of bulb, it is which communication protocol your devices speak — because that determines what you can add later.

Practical advice. Under about ten devices, Wi-Fi is fine and avoids extra hardware. Beyond that, a Zigbee or Thread mesh with a hub is more reliable and less taxing on your router. If you are starting now, favour Matter-compatible devices — it is the only protocol with genuine multi-vendor buy-in.
Easiest and cheapest to start. The flaw is the wall switch: if someone switches it off at the wall, the bulb loses power and stops responding. Fine for lamps, awkward for main room lighting.
Replace the wall switch itself, so ordinary bulbs stay controllable and the wall switch keeps working normally. This is the better answer for permanent room lighting. In the US it usually requires a neutral wire in the switch box — check before buying, since older homes often lack one.
A central control system with dimmer modules in a panel. Expensive, requires planning at build or rewire stage, and unmatched for a whole-house installation. Rarely worth retrofitting to a single room.
